INTRODUCTION

An IAEA Technical Meeting on Accelerator-based physics for sustaining the flow of technology and skills will take place from 7 –10 November 2005 at iThemba LABS, Cape Town, Republic of South Africa. This technical meeting is being held as a satellite event to the World Conference on Physics and Sustainable Development, which occurs during the preceding week in Durban, Republic of South Africa.  Accelerator-based physics has grown from its roots in nuclear physics research into a mature broad ranging science and technology serving social and economic development in Member States. Innovations in accelerator technologies, techniques, and nuclear instrumentation are continuing to enable successful solutions to many challenging problems, both in the traditional application areas of engineering and physical sciences and increasingly, in the areas of environmental and life sciences.

The purpose of this meeting is to identify and highlight emerging and future issues and challenges faced by the low and medium energy research accelerator community in continuing to effectively contribute to solutions to priority national development problems, and suggest means to respond. The meeting will bring together scientific expertise from a wide range of applications that utilize accelerator-based technologies and techniques, to present the latest results, innovations, and future outlook, with a view to define priority areas of research and development necessary to sustain the flow of knowledge and skills. The topics to be covered will include:

The topic list is by no means exhaustive. Participants are encouraged to present contributions in other topics that are consistent with the theme and scope of the meeting.

OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of the Technical Meeting is to advise the Agency of issues and challenges faced by the low and medium energy research accelerator community in continuing to provide effective contributions to solutions to emerging and future priority problems. The specific objectives of this meeting are:
