IAEA
Technical Meeting on
“Accelerator-based physics for sustaining the flow of technology
and skills”
7 – 10 November 2005
An IAEA
Technical Meeting on Accelerator-based physics for sustaining the flow of
technology and skills will take place from 7 –10 November 2005 at
iThemba LABS, Cape Town, Republic of South Africa. This technical meeting is
being held as a satellite event to the World Conference on Physics and
Sustainable Development, which occurs during the preceding week in Durban,
Republic of South Africa.
Accelerator-based physics has grown from its roots in nuclear physics
research into a mature broad ranging science and technology serving social and
economic development in Member States. Innovations in accelerator technologies,
techniques, and nuclear instrumentation are continuing to enable successful
solutions to many challenging problems, both in the traditional application
areas of engineering and physical sciences and increasingly, in the areas of
environmental and life sciences.
The purpose of this
meeting is to identify and highlight emerging and future issues and challenges
faced by the low and medium energy research accelerator community in continuing
to effectively contribute to solutions to priority national development
problems, and suggest means to respond. The meeting will bring together
scientific expertise from a wide range of applications that utilize
accelerator-based technologies and techniques, to present the latest results, innovations,
and future outlook, with a view to define priority areas of research and
development necessary to sustain the flow of knowledge and skills. The topics
to be covered will include:
The topic list is by no
means exhaustive. Participants are encouraged to present contributions in other
topics that are consistent with the theme and scope of the meeting.
The overall objective of
the Technical Meeting is to advise the Agency of issues and challenges faced by
the low and medium energy research accelerator community in continuing to
provide effective contributions to solutions to emerging and future priority problems.
The specific objectives of this meeting are:
The format of the meeting will be invited and contributed oral presentations presented in sessions devoted to special topics, with subsequent discussions. There is no restriction on the duration of presentations. An overhead projector for transparencies and an electronic projector with a computer capable of reading CD's and memory sticks will be available (Power Point recommended). The official language of the meeting is English. No interpretation will be provided. It is expected that the meeting will start at 09:00 on 7 November 2005 and conclude by 12:00 on 10 November 2005.
Persons from IAEA Member
States or invited international organizations are eligible to attend.
Participants should be persons actively involved in the subject matter of the
meeting. All persons wishing to participate in the work of this meeting are
requested to complete a Participation Form and send it as soon as possible to
the competent official authority (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Atomic
Energy Authority, or invited organization) for subsequent transmission to the
IAEA. A participant will be accepted only if the Participation Form is
transmitted through the competent official authority of a Member State of the
IAEA or by an organization invited to participate. Participants whose
designations have been received by the IAEA will receive further details
approximately two to three months before the meeting.
APPLICATION FOR PARTICIPATION FORM
Persons wishing to make
a presentation must submit an abstract, maximum one page total length, in
electronic format directly to N.Dytlewski@iaea.org. The
abstract must be text only and must contain the author’s name, affiliation and
email address. Acceptable file formats are Microsoft Word (preferred), HTML, or
plain text. The one page abstract must be received by 26 August 2005.
The abstracts will be evaluated, and authors informed of the acceptance of
their contributions by email, by 12 September 2005. The programme agenda and a
book of abstracts will be prepared and emailed to all participants as PDF file
attachments.
Electronic versions of
presentations must be sent to N.Dytlewski@iaea.org by 21
October 2005. The presentations should be sent either as a Microsoft Word
file, Power Point file, or Adobe PDF format file, complete with all text,
figures and tables. All presentations will be converted as received, to an
Adobe PDF file and placed on a CD-ROM for distribution to all participants at
the meeting.
The costs for the
organization of the meeting are borne by the IAEA and the Host Government. No
registration fee is charged to participants.
As a general rule, the IAEA does not pay for participants´ travel and
living expenses. However, limited financial support is available to assist the
attendance of selected experts, principally those from developing Member
States. Usually only one grant for financial support is awarded per Member
State. If governments wish to apply for a grant on behalf of one of their
experts, they should ensure that applications for grants are:
Received by the IAEA
Scientific Secretary by 26 August 2005,
Accompanied by a duly
completed and signed Grant Application Form, and
Accompanied by an
estimate of a valid travel agent of their flight costs to/from Cape Town.
Applications that do not
comply with these requirements will not be considered. The grants awarded will
be in the form of lump sums usually covering only part of the cost of
attendance. The grants are paid at the meeting. Grants for financial support will
be announced around 26 September 2005.
Designated participants
who require a visa to enter the Republic of South Africa should submit the
necessary application to the nearest diplomatic or consular representative of
the Republic of South Africa as soon as possible. A letter of invitation, if
needed, has to be requested from the IAEA Scientific Secretary.
It is the responsibility of the participants to arrange their accommodation. Detailed information on transport arrangements to/from iThemba LABS and other items will be sent to all designated participants approximately two to three months before the meeting.
